"Was reminded of the Bible stories he had been told" (S82)
Was reminded of the Bible stories he had been told when he was at school. Jesse's parents had never been particularly religious, but the school was only a stone's throw away from his house. He was reminded of his old school chaplain, a man with an aged smile and warm timbre to his voice, but, Jesse remembered, seemed obsessed with "the Christ that lies within us all". Jesse knew that all those light, fuzzy "be kind" mantras worked for some, but it never made any impression on him. He was happy enough with test tubes and Bunsen burners - science had been his best subject, so it was no wonder he became a lab technician. But the man in the video didn't sound like his old chaplain. Sure, his white beard and dulcit tones were just as captivating, but this man wasn't telling Jesse to be kind. By being kind, Jesse felt he could never say no. Now he had 32 work messages breathing down his neck and felt overwhelmed. The more he watched the video, he noticed that the Bible stories the man was talking about were about struggle, pain and suffering. And that's when Jesse felt something. The man wasn't talking about kindness and compassion. He was talking about how Abraham was called by God to go out into the world and make a name for himself. That's what Jesse wanted all his life. He wanted to go out there and be somebody.
