"The speaker began with a sharp-witted one liner" (S68)
The speaker began with a sharp-witted one liner. It gained a few laughs from his live audience and even made Jesse chuckle a little from behind their phone. He didn’t seem like any traditional priest. He used plain language and swore. All of this was part of the speaker’s hook.
The joke worked well at breaking the ice and Jesse was now deeply intrigued by what he had to say.
As the speaker transitioned to a more serious tone, soft music began to play in the background. It was some religious message about Christ and the modern world.
The video ended. Curious about who this man was, Jesse searched for his page and discovered he was the pastor at an American church with a large online following.
After a few minutes of scrolling through his content, Jesse’s curiosity had piqued and now been satisfied.
At one last attempt to squeeze some entertainment from the speaker’s content, Jesse took a glance through his comment section and found it to be total chaos.
Every other comment seemed to trigger an argument between the viewers. Some expressed hurt, whilst others were defensive fans of the speaker. What set out to be a quick distraction for Jesse had become far too stressful.
Jesse returned to the explore page and continued scrolling.
