This page summarises the researchers' findings on the factors that support and promote learning in Vietnam and identifies the teaching of metacognitive knowledge and strategies which are required for learning conceptual and procedural aspects of new knowledge as the main factor which distinguishes high-performing from low-performing classrooms in the country. A more nunanced understanding of the complexity of teaching and pedagogical practices, and a design of teacher support, which cannot be achieved through top-down, control-driven reforms, are required.
