"So, Jesse continued watching and, despite barely understanding" (S88)
So, Jesse continued watching and, despite barely understanding any word from the video, was captivated by the curious details that show a different flavour of Christianity from the ones he knows. Jesse was brought up Catholic in Belfast – in one of the few families that managed to live with differences that one cannot ignore but choose to ignore nonetheless. His Protestant mother could not explain the situation either. Religion was not a topic of conversation in the family, nor was it a way of life: it was a mere cultural reminder and nothing more. When the video eventually finished, Jesse thought that it was probably from one of the many conflicting versions of the same faith that went way over his head growing up. He had time to waste, so he looked up the person in the video. He wasn't wrong – 'one of the many conflicting versions' was right, with emphasis on 'conflicting'.
Jesse scrolled through a number of search results talking about a foreign word that was perhaps Greek that he recognises from another faith, but that he was sure wasn't Christian. He was confused. There were a few articles in Russian too. The person in the video has an article written about him from the university where he used to teach until two years ago. Jesse found some incomprehensible details that confused him further, and he was about to close the tab until he read a landmark he recognised. 'Perhaps I can go there and find out,' he said.
Jesse will head to Ennismore Gardens in the morning. For now, that is his plan to get through the next few days.
