"It was his genuine humility that was so striking" (S42)
It was his genuine humility that was so striking. There was no performance or pretend self-effacement. He waved his hands while narrating the story of some ancient figure and made no attempt to show-off his own charisma, only his objective admiration. His admiration for the Saint was so pure too. Jesse had heard of the name before but always in these condescending alt-right edits that made him out to be some kind of Ubermensch. This was an entirely different take. The man was clearly some kind of historian who knew better than to indulge in sentimentality and yet his account was still deeply personal. As he read a quote from the Saint, he added ‘This is the one that always gets to me in all that I do.’ He laughed and was almost embarrassed to admit how much the love for one figure had shaped his life. The most unusual part was at the end of the video. After reading a final quote, he fell completely silent while still staring at the camera. For about ten seconds, Jesse found himself staring into the eyes of a man while holding silence out of reverence for a saint.
