After a hard day working on the fields, my mum and her two sisters (all under 20 years of age) were asked to help the farmer slaughter a pig in one of the barns. They were city girls and this was yet another spectacle unknown to them. Tired and a little nervous of the grumpy farmer and what he was about to do, they stood together giggling. The farmer shouted "quick! Go, get a bucket for the blood!" to my mum and she thought he was joking.

By the time she snapped to it and got the bucket, all of the blood was lost - the farmer was furious. She didn't realise that the blood was needed to make black pudding. All three sisters learned very quickly that nothing on the farm was wasted!
