online resource

The contributor shared that the wooden money box was received from his father and had been obtained in Italy at the end of the Second World War. The contributor's father did not speak about his wartime experiences, and the contributor noted that this was common amongst men who had fought in the war. The contributor's father had been a primary school teacher prior to the war, and he returned to this profession after the war.

The contributor noted that the gas mask had belonged to Betty Pierce, from Tilehurst, who worked as a laboratory assistant. The contributor would use the gas mask while he was studying chemistry, and he advised that it may have been made by Betty's mother.
