William Cutting's Navy Story

online resource

Julia's family is from a navy background. Her grandad (William Cutting) was born on 2nd December 1915. He was from a small village in Suffix and he was a fisherman. He enrolled to work at HDA but one morning he was told war had started and he was drafted to war. When he was 20 years old he was on a ship and the ship was hit by a bomb. The radiation from the bomb made all his hair fall off and he went very pale from the shock. It also made his eardrums burst and they would sometimes bleed. During his time in the war William went to Italy but the events that happened there were very hard for him so he did not speak of them. He made a good friend who was polish. His friend escaped from Poland but his wife was never found. When William passed away he had his union jack standard put on his coffin and Julia still has that today.
