My mother (married in 1936) and her mother (widowed in 1929) lived together during the Blitz in Northumberland Avenue, Pinner/Harrow, London. I wasn't born until after the war, my father was away with the RNVR in Africa.

My mother told me that she and her mother had gone to their local cinema to watch 'The Great Dictator (I don't have the date but someone might be able to work this out). The sirens warned of a German air raid but nobody left the cinema - they were enjoying the movie too much. This is a small confirmation of the guts and determination of the British during the war.
