Police Officers on Sheppey manned two areas, Sheerness and the rest of the Island manned from Queenborough. The policeman at Queenborough had a bicycle. My father-in-law Thomas Edward Allsworth (Tom) had one of very few cars in Queenborough because his business was running Thames Barges. He helped the policeman when he could. There was a report of signals being spotted at Harty where a ferry linked Sheppey to the mainland. These might have been from an enemy vessel in the Swale. Tom took the policeman out to Harty where they found that it was our own troops on either side of the Swale chatting. After the policeman's visit the signals stopped!
