My grandfather ran a small building firm in Plymouth prior to the onset of WWII. When the war started the men working with him joined up. The building company closed and the men presented my grandad with a highwayman as a gift. It was a cigarette lighter. It has been on the mantlepiece for three generations as a reminder of the difficult times and of the great esteem that the men held for W.W. Merchant.
