WWII Memories Through Sam Taylor's Family Lens
The contributor Sam Taylor's grandmother, Sylvia Taylor, was only 7 when World War II started and she was evacuated in September 1939 to Cumbria. The children were selected by the people taking them in. She was in Kendal for about 8 months, when it was considered safe for her to go back to South Shields. The bombing continued, so she was sent back again to elsewhere in Cumbria. She really enjoyed it. Sam brought photos from when she was evacuated and of South Shields during the bombing.
Sam's great-grandfather, Harry Newman, built Spitfire planes and worked in the Home Guard. He got married on 30 November 1940. However, the church was bombed the night before; on the copy of the wedding certificate, it says that the venue had to be changed due to bombing. Sam also brought photos from the wedding, and photos of other relatives during the war including their great-grandfather and great-uncle, and postcards from their great uncle.
