My father worked as an instrument technician on Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. Group Captain 'Cats Eyes' Cunningham arrived at Tangmere flying his Spitfire. This pilot was famous for his night vision, supposedly from eating carrots!

My Dad offered to check out this particular Spitfire, but was prevented from doing so by specialist technicians who arrived specifically to maintain this machine. My Dad realized that these technicians were boffins, that there was some night vision apparatus on board, and he kept quiet about his thoughts until the end of the war. As he said to me, he didn't like carrots anyway.
