Two stories of E.P. Dovey RM and Charles Spencer Stay

Charlie Spencer Stay was in the East Surrey Regiment, which was part of the 8th Army. He fought at El Alamein and Monte Cassino after landing at Salerno. As officers were sniper targets and identifiable because they carried Thompson submachine guns, he volunteered to carry his Sergeant's machine gun. The Sergeant died, but he survived. During fighting in the Po Valley, he was shot in the stomach, and he always claimed this was from a Yank's gun, making him a casualty of 'friendly fire'.

Eddie Dovey of the Royal Marine MNDBZ was a Beach Marshal who maintained, policed, and took off casualties from beaches. He was involved in four beach assaults, including Salerno, Sicily, and Normandy. He was a Provisional Sergeant for the 4th Commando Brigade in Holland. During the Normandy invasions, Antwerp was used to supply the front line troops. The 42 and 47 Commandos were sent to take Walcheren Island, which was heavily fortified by the Germans. Of the 50 Allied tanks that landed, only two managed to get ashore. However, there were no German tanks in the area, so although only two tanks landed, they had provisions for 50 and were able to operate round the clock, providing cover for the Commandos who were sent in at night for hand-to-hand fighting.

He was a Provisional Sergeant at the Bergen op Zoom trials of informers, responsible for bringing witnesses from secure locations. He recalls that many of them were prostitutes.
