Margaret's grandfather, Thomas Grannell, was in the army before WW1. He and his brother joined and went to Germany, where his brother was shot - and Thomas ended up in a POW camp. Thomas was put on the Roll of Honour in Liverpool. His wife had five children in six years.

Thomas was in Liverpool during WWII. Margaret was born in 1938. Her grandmother adopted her after her mother died of tuberculosis; and together, they lived on Wellington Road. Margaret has celebratory memories of the war ending - of bonfires, a barrage of singing and balloons, and of the Japanese defeat. Her grandma was upset over the Germans being blamed for everything and the targeting of ordinary Germans.
