The doodlebug over my school

I was in Junior School on Canvey Island and one fine June day in 1944 a flying bomb's light went out, not above the school but not far away. I've never seen teachers move so fast getting us all into the shelters!

I lived on Canvey Island from mid-1941 until after the War ended. My mother ran a pharmacy on Canvey right through the war, and we, my sister and I, lived over and behind the shop. My mother's sister acted as housekeeper.
