The death of my mother's best friend in a bombing

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 18:59 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

My mother's best friend, Irene Carter, was killed when a bomb fell on a dance hall in London on 7th November 1943. She was aged 16.

My mother should have been with her, but because Irene's cousin was going and my mum really didn't like her, she made up an excuse not to go.

Irene's mother gave my mum Irene's Bible to remember her by, and I now have that Bible along with a Remembrance Card.

The Bible had been given to Irene by her teacher, Miss Leech, on 18th December 1938.
