The Samurai Sword
My father, Gerry Gorman, was an officer in the Royal Artillery in Burma from 1944-45. He was the commandant of a POW camp for Japanese army officers for a short while after the war ended and was given a 600-year-old sword by Lt. Toshizo Hyuga. My father typed up an account of how he came by the sword and retained a short note from Lt. Hyuga about the sword's history.
In the 1980s, my father tried to return the sword to Lt. Hyuga, but the Japanese Embassy was unable to locate him. As an interesting postscript, Chief Inspector John Williams, who is mentioned in my father's account, was able to track down the descendants of Lt. Hyuga, and the sword was duly returned. This was reported in the press at the time, but I cannot find the article, I'm afraid.
