During the London Blitz a 500lb land mine fell on the house opposite our flat. Fortunately it had a parachute attached to it and this became entangled in the chimney of the house. Everyone around us were evacuated in the middle of the night. My father was on night duty in the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) and had no idea where my mother, sister and I were. It was one of the most frightening experiences in a long summer of raids on London.
