My grandad was Flight Sargeant 'Bill' George William Green who served with the 582nd Squadron, attached to 101 Squadron during the last year of the Second World War. He was a rear gunner (tail end charlie) on Lancasters, flying out of numerous bases in Lincolnshire. One operation he took part in was the raid on Chemnitz in Germany in 1945, a day after the Dresden fire bombing. He would recall that the bomb run on Chemnitz was like bombing in daylight from the fires from Dresden which was still burning.
