I remember the War and ration books, even for clothes. People had to shop at the same shop named on the ration book, whether you liked it or not. There was no choice. My family had a metal semi-circular shelter in the garden, at Selly Oak (Birmingham). We didn't like to go into it. It wasn't pleasant, all crouched down and cold and damp. We didn't have bombs in Selly Oak but there were bombs in Birmingham.

I had a gas mask. It was a Walt Disney one.
