My father, Sgt. Thomas Carey, found himself on the beach at Dunkirk, waiting for a boat to rescue him. He did not think he had a chance of survival with the number of planes bombing the beach, so he dug himself a little hole in the sand. He called it a fox hole and he wrote my mother's name in the sand with matchsticks thinking it was his goodbye to her. But he was rescued, submerged up to his chest in water, with his rifle held above his head. And he always said that was Hitler's biggest mistake- he should have followed right behind the retreating army. As it was mayhem when they reached the shores of England, he was put on a train to Scotland to get them away from the South coast, but it took him ages to get back to his Regiment and reform.
