Stewart Collins as Rear Gunner on Lancaster Bomber

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:00 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

Stewart was eager to travel. He joined the RAF as soon as he could. He trained as an air gunner at RAF Saltby, qualifying to undertake flying duties in 1942, (2 years at RAF school). His Lancaster Bomber 49 Squadron, (he was rear gunner), failed to return to base after an operational flight on 2/3 September 1942. It had been shot down over Belgium (Abbe). Three airmen were killed including Stewart. They were buried with military honours, as confirmed by German sources - a photo was taken of the ceremony and received by Stewart's family. They were buried later at Heverlee war cemetery.

Stewart's father was a sub-postmaster at Galloway Street, Maxwelltown for many years. He put together an album of memories, keeping papers relating to his family. Stewart and Marjory's military services included. This was found by Stewart's brother Neil when his father died. He remembers his big brother with much fondness and love and has visited his grave.
