Stan and Chris were nineteen-year-old lovers in 1939. Stan joined the Navy in May 1941 and they married in August. Stan served for eight months in a destroyer as an Ordinary Seaman before being made a Lieutenant RNVR and joining the 22nd Motor Torpedo Boat Flotilla patrolling the North Sea. He was based in Occupied Germany during 1946.

They wrote to each other every day they were apart and 1200 or so letters - from both sides of the correspondence - survived.
