Spitfire or Hurricane Drop Tank
The contributor shared the story of how they obtained the spitfire dump tank. The contributor stated that, in approximately 1985, their in-laws spoke to a neighbour who mentioned "the bomb." Around 1999, "the bomb" was found and was identified as an aluminium drop tank. The contributor clarified that the drop tank was a long range tank for a Hurricane of Spitfire, which would be attached to the bottom of the plane. The contributor shared that the house where the drop tank was found is close to the Royal Air Force base in Abingdon. They explained that such tanks were found all over the area, particularly near to the River Thames. The contributor added that children used to strap these tanks together and use them for rafting. The contributor noted that the family had thought the tank was German; however, it was identified by the RAF as British. The contributor also stated that, during the war, soldiers had complained about the beer in France, so Watney's flew tanks over from England that were filled with their beer. The contributor noted that they keep this tank in their garden, and it is a good conversation starter.
