My father was a driver in the army during WW2. I was a late baby, and neither he nor anyone else ever really spoke of his time in the service. I have the feeling it marked him - we weren't close, and he wasn't very emotionally forthcoming. I don't know who the man he was before or during the war was; I only know what it left him as.
