Lived in Southampton during the war, where the bombing was very bad. Shrapnel was picked up after a raid.

Her father was an ARP Warden and during the day helped manufacture parts for Spitfires. They had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden. She remembers telling her mother that the sky was pretty as it looked red, not realising it was the docks being bombed. Her garden was on a spring, so her sister had to pump all the water out of the shelter each day.
