Sheila Williams's memories of war at boarding school

Sheila and her twin sister were sent to boarding school so they wouldn't be split up when evacuated. There were flares going over Birmingham, and the Germans wanted to bomb Longbridge (an ammunition factory), so it was a frightening time.

They lived in a suburb of Birmingham and travelled for their ration books. The diet in the country was better than in the town. There were no supermarkets, only individual shops. Rationing ended in 1952, and sweets were restricted.
