Ron Morris, Dental Mechanic in the Navy
My father was Ronald Henry Morris, known as Ron, from Tavistock in Devon, (1917-2001). He trained as a dental mechanic in London and joined the Navy by choice in the war as he didn't want to be called up into the Army 'with all that marching'. He was a Petty Officer working as a dental mechanic and was asked to go to Gibraltar. He was told it would be for three months but that actually turned into three and a half years. He slept in a hammock on a barge in the harbour and talked of stocking the hospital in the big cave while he was there. During his time there he never stepped off the small area of Gibraltar as the frontier to Spain was closed. I have a photo of the dental branch and their names (Ron is back row, far left). He made an accurate model of Gibraltar while out there using dental materials and a hardwood base. He wrote a brief record of his time in the Navy in his immaculate handwriting. There are also photos of him back in HMS Drake in 1945 with the names of the personnel (Ron is back row, third from right).
