The contributors' grandfather, RAF sergeant Terence McCorry, was married in 1939. Their grandmother, Mary McCorry (nee Beggs), was pregnant with Michael, the contributors' father. She was asked to go to Dublin to give birth. Her husband was probably in Sierra Leone.

Michael was born in April 1941. A visitor to the hospital offered accommodation in Dublin because it would be safer than returning to Belfast. There is only one photograph of Michael and his parents which turned out to be his father's final departure.

Terence McCorry served in 95 squadron as a sergeant gunner in a Sunderland flying boat (service number 522577). He was killed on 14th November 1941 in an encounter over Bay of Biscay. He was the only member of the crew who died. He was shot aged 28. His funeral was held from Holy Cross in Ardoyne.
