Raymond Wringe
This story is about my great-grandad, Raymond Wringe. He served in World War II between the years 1939-1945. He achieved the rank of private but never any higher than that. He was 22 years old when he joined. He was sent all over the world to places including India, where he became very ill with malaria. He spent most of his time in Africa, where he joined the tank regiment as a tank driver. He worked under a general called Alexander Wavell, who worked alongside Field Marshal Montgomery out in the desert. Raymond didn't like Montgomery. They were working against someone called Rommel. They said that he was very clever, so they gave him the nickname Desert Fox.
My great-grandad didn't speak of the war that much, but he said the worst job he had to do was remove the dead bodies from the other tanks. He was issued a special tie for soldiers who worked in the tank regiment. He wasn't awarded any special medal but did get the War Medal, the Eastern Star, and one to show that he was there. He never wore his medals.
