In 1939 two sisters living in Manchester, Joyce and Jeanne Hastie, had an unusual idea to raise money for the war effort. They chose a small square tablecloth and charged friends and family one shilling (equivalent to about £2) each to sign their names on the cloth in pencil. They then embroidered over each name. There are about 200 names on the cloth, so they raised about £40 - equivalent to £200 today.
