Brent 1866, 162-3: The lock has a bolt made to ascend diagonally into the bronze plate, which is rather more than six inches long, and one and a quarter wide, and is very like such a plate on our own door-posts. Part of the original woodwork remained attached to the lock; but the whole is scarcely perfect enough to solve the mystery of the curious hooked Anglo-Saxon keys, and shew how they performed their office.Iron lock with bronze plate for bolt which descends diagonally into hole in plate. Plate is rather more than 6 inches long and 1 14/4 inches wide. Part of original woodwork attached to lock. This is the plane cf. Archaeologia Cantiana LXXIII (1959), 146ff.Catalogue number attributed to this object from comparison of description in the original excavation report (Brent 1866, 162-3) and the catalogue (Payne 1892a, 36). – D.H.
