The contributor's grandfather, Gershon, was born in Kiev, Ukraine. To add some broader familial context: the family was Jewish and was forced to leave Tsarist Russia in 1867. They moved to Liverpool and the contributor's great-grandfather set up a tobacconist company (cigarette manufacturer) known as Nathan & Co.

Gershon was a veteran of both WWI and WWII. In WWII, he served in the Liverpool Regiment, Notts & Derby Regiment, R.A.S.C. The contributor does not know much about the details of his service in WWII; she is looking into details through ongoing research.
