The contributor stated that her father, Edmund Kinchen, joined the Navy in 1940, and he served on the Merlin ship ML-191. The contributor noted that her father was not interested in participating in gatherings organised by Navy officials, as it reminded him of his friends who had died. The contributor's father was involved in D-Day (related documentation uploaded under item number 653), and he later joined the HMS Lamerton (L88). The contributor's father had been awarded 5 medals by the time he passed away.

Prior to the contributor's parents meeting, her mother, Kathleen Reffold, lived in the Guildford area and was enrolled in the Land Army. The Land Army worked on farms to produce food for the soldiers.
