This is a 4th year longitudinal small group elective focused on Health Humanities that uses an online delivery mode through ZOOM platform. This course involves reflective writing to a host of humanities-inspired prompts and the sharing of written reflections in a safe, small group. The purpose of this elective is to develop students’ capacities for continuous reflection and self-regulation through the lens of health humanities readings, visual arts, music and reflective writing. This course will consist of 60 total hours of time accrued from June through March, with students completing at least 20 out of 30 scheduled sessions during this 9 month period, in order to receive the `two-week elective’ credit. Each session will have one (1) hour required
pre-work, and two hours of virtual meeting time (for a total 20 hours pre-work, and 40 hours of in-session time). Attendance will be tracked by the students in One45. For each meeting session, there will be an assigned "artifact" (reading/video/art) paired a complementary or contrasting, music, artwork, video or play offered in-session. Students will be expected to review the "artifact" ahead of time and, during the session, consider the additional materials presented, and prepare a reflective narrative in response to an aligned prompt that draws on their own experiences with in the clinical environment with colleagues and patients. These in-session narratives can be refined for a future submission to a scholarly publication like Narrateur. Students will also be expected to share their writings among peers and respond constructively to the work shared by others. All assignments for attended sessions (20 minimum and more welcome) must be completed to pass this elective course. An exit interview and course evaluation is also required.
Elective only. Hofstra University/Northwell also offers a Humanities in Medicine Scholarly Concentration, to which this course can contribute if students wish. For more information see: https://medicine.hofstra.edu/education/humanities-in-med.html
