My Uncle, Harry Warden, served in the British Army during WWII. Where he actually served is a bit of a mystery because, according to his medals, he served in North Africa, but we know that he was captured and made prisoner of war by the Japanese.

He never, even when directly asked, divulged anything about his service or internment as we think he suffered so badly. That is one thing about my Uncle. This is an example that all those experiences are lost.

The medals he was awarded were still in the unopened box that they were delivered, such was his wish to put all that behind him. We will have to try and trace him through the records in Kew.

The same applied to another Uncle who had served in WWI. He never wanted to talk or put down in writing what he went through.
