My father was with the Queen's Boys (2nd Dragoon Guards) and "Desert Rats". Hazel had many photos of North Africa. He fought at Tripoli, El Alamein, Monte Cassino, Sicily and Rome.

Mum and Dad wrote to one another every day of the war. Dad numbered letters in the top corner. After he came home, they burnt all the letters in a dustbin. The children saw this happen in their bedroom. The intention was to mark the start of a new life. The problem of returning servicemen taking up lives as family men again. Learning new routines. He kept a diary of the numbered letters he sent to his wife.
