My mother was evacuated twice during World War II. The first time that she and her two younger sisters, my aunts, were evacuated was a disaster. The woman that they were sent to did not feed them and my mother wrote back home to say that they were starving. My granny promptly jumped on a train and brought them back home again.
The second evacuation was to Worcestershire and was much more successful. My mother told me stories of when she would climb an apple tree with a book to read and then just reach out and pick an apple to eat whilst enjoying her book.
