Mum and Dad 1939
Mum was the youngest of twelve, in the East End in mid 1939. Dad joined up, and had to report to Catterick for training on a Thursday. So he proposed to mum and they married on the Tuesday! They went to the "pictures" to celebrate. His reasoning was that during and after the war she may have had difficulty in getting back to normal, so his war pension (if the worst happened) would help. Otherwise they could start afresh when hostilities ceased. They were married for forty five years, brought up my sister and me in a loving hard-working family. Always in the East End (come on you Hammers) and always in a friendly neighborhood. He served in the Eighth Army under Monty, and ended up in Italy. He never spoke of any bad times, but always prayed at Remembrance Sunday, and shed a few tears.
