Moral Boosting Cartoon

Attached is a cartoon trying to make light of Coventry's plight after the night of the Blitz on November 14th 1940. Drawn by Van Art, who was the pen name of Arthur Keene Senior. This was one of a series created during WW2. This one is signed by Alderman John Arthur Mosely J.P. Mayor of Coventry at the time. The Mayor himself was no stranger to the Blitz when on the fateful night a stray bomb caused damage to their family home. After a sleepless night, there was a knock at what was left of the front door. Mrs. Moseley yelled out that the door was too damaged to open and that whoever it was would have to go around the back. A few minutes later she called her, unshaven, unwashed and haggard husband downstairs saying that a Naval Officer in Uniform was coming down the rear garden path when she exclaimed that it was the King! He as well as Churchill had come to see the damage wrought overnight!

There are a number of this particular cartoon signed by the Mayor. It is unclear why they were signed but possibly as a fundraiser for those affected in Coventry at the time.
