During the war my family lived in Queenborough, Kent with my father's aunt, Mrs Shanahan. My father, James Hendry, was in the Royal Navy, and his uncle Bert Shanahan was an engineer on Sheerness Naval Dockyard Tugs. My mother, Mrs Una Hendry, told me, many years later, that shortly before D Day, both she and my great aunt received letters telling them not to be concerned if they heard nothing from their husbands for a few weeks, as they might be at sea.
