Contributor was evacuated in 1939 from Coventry via Romford to Aldeburgh. After Dunkirk was re-evacuated to Leek Wootton near Kenilworth which had no bus service, meaning he and his brother had to cycle back to Coventry. They survived the Coventry Blitz and in April 1941 their mother was injured working in a hospital, and she relocated to Wootton. He was evacuated again to a farm where he spent the rest of 1941 working while his brother joined the RAF. While there he joined the ATC and suffered skin irritation from the Army uniform. Aged 17 he signed on to the Merchant Navy but did not see active service.
