Memories of the War - Harry Godfree Davis
Worked in research - lubricants - so stayed in that profession during the war (possibly Reserved Occupation). Served during 1942-1944 in Fire Service during the Blitz. Was also a member of the Home Guard. Photo in front of Plymouth College (indistinguishable word) - written on the drum is "Devon & Cornwall Fortress" - often Home Guard units had bands.
[Note: "Devon & Cornwall Fortress" refers to the two Royal Engineer units below;
1. The "Cornwall Fortress Royal Engineers" was a volunteer unit of Britain's Royal Engineers formed in 1908 - they helped to defend the coastal towns of Cornwall
2. During the inter-war years, the Devonshire Fortress Engineers were reformed at Muttley Barracks, Plymouth, in the renamed Territorial Army (TA) in 1920, forming part of the Coast Defence forces in the 43rd (Wessex) Divisional Area.
3. In 1933, the unit was amalgamated with the Cornwall Fortress Engineers at Falmouth and became the Devonshire and Cornwall (Fortress) Engineers.]
