Memories of the War - Geoffrey Coward
My Great-grandpa said, "It wasn't too scary for us as it felt far away. But I remember one time I was in the bedroom with my Mum and Auntie Mary and we heard an airplane go over with a deep sound and someone said "that must be a German bomber" and a minute later we heard a screechy lighter sounding plane, like a Spitfire, go over and we think it must have been chasing it to stop its bombing."
"Food was rationed - we had coupons and we couldn't get too much. The war felt far away but we knew about it. Life went on in Ramsbottom. I do remember a bomb drop in Stubbins. Great-great-grandma Rhodes' house was near to where a German bomb fell in Stubbins and they felt unsafe and the houses it landed near were taken down. Grants Tower fell down as there was a rumour that the British Forces used it as gun/target practice I think."
"My Grandad brought a German helmet back with a spike on to show us all. What else? My Uncle Dick's ship sank in the British docks. They lost all the equipment and he came home in a vest and shorts."
