My great-grandfather was called Christopher Demain. He was born in Salford on the 18th of November 1920. He joined before the start of WW2. He joined Lancashire Fusiliers his number was 3448891. He initially joined the war using his older brother's birth certificate as he was too young. He was shipped over to France at the outset of the war. He was involved in the retreat to Dunkirk and was captured south of Dunkirk in the town of Bethune. He then spent the rest of WW2 as a prisoner of war in various POW camps, one of them being Stalag XXA Thorn his POW number was 11037. He spent time in France, Germany and Poland (he was also marched through Poland). Later after the war had ended he was awarded the military medal of bravery. The situation was posted in London on the 11th of October 1945. After the war, he returned to Salford to work for the Greengate and Irwell Rubber company. He got married and had 3 children who were all male. He was born on 18/11/1920.
