James and Hilda ran the Post Office at Elveden Hall during WWII. This was the headquarters of the 3rd Air Division. They ran the telephone exchange and the village shop. At the time Frank Beresford was the artist attached to Elveden Hall and he stayed at the Post Office. They attended many important functions at Elveden Hall and played an important role in the life of the village. My mother worked at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital from 1936 to 1939 and then moved to Bury St. Edmunds hospital. She was a nurse on the burns unit treating airmen of all nationalities British, American and Polish. My father was with the Society of St John the Evangelist in India during WW2. After the war my mother moved up to work at Newcastle General . Her brother Edward Plumb moved to work as a farm manager at Hedon on the Wall, Northumberland. My father was visiting the farm and saw a photo of a nurse. The family got talking and they had similar connections in India and at the post office. He and my mother met and were married in 1949 by Anglican Bishop Noel Baring Hudson. The family friendship with James Beresford continued and he later stayed with my parents after their marriage.
