The contributor's father, Stuart Hughes (Thomas CS) joined the RAMC and served in the Middle East in late 1930s. He was later sent to France in January 1940 to work in the RAMC Hospital in Boulogne. He served as a male nursing orderly and was involved in British evacuation from the area during the Fall of France.

While in France, he met P.G. Wodehouse and wife. They became lifelong friends and correspondents. In 1939, he also met General Montgomery in Haifa, Palestine, and cared for him during illness.

Later, he was sent to UK and then France. After France, he was invalided out and worked in constructing camps for the US army in northern France.
