The contributor was born in 1947. She recalls that her parents’ house had an air raid shelter, which her father had dug himself. During the war, a bomb dropped on an old charter house wall in Coventry, which came through the roof of the house. The contributor's father was called Arthur Hughes; he was a Draughtsman. She recalled that a 'young man' by the name of Clive Walker (a family friend) was not injured during the war.

During the war, her mother worked in a bus transport office, and her father was in the Home Guard. Additionally, her two siblings, who were alive during the war, were evacuated to Cubbington. In the 1950s, her brother worked in the RAF as a flying officer.
