Memories of Two World Wars

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:04 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

The contributor's grandfather, Patrick Joseph Hughes, was part of both World Wars. He joined World War I underage at fourteen years old and also won medals. He always ended letters with "from your loving father/husband".

His photos show that he has aged from experiences. He did not talk much about them and was a true gentleman. He was in Toulouse. He went to Middle East and found locals hard to trust.

His family thinks he didn't fight during the entire war, perhaps because of a lung issue. First time, it was adventure for him; the second time, duty, service, and protection were his reasons to join army. He was in the Royal Ulster Rifles 2nd Company.

The contributor's father was evacuated and sent somewhere to County Down. He was born in 1935. They lived in Belfast, market area.
